On September 10, 2016, World Suicide Prevention Day, YEG Mental Health (formerly known as EMHAC Edmonton Mental Health Awareness Committee) held the inaugural Bridge of Life event at Constable Ezio Faraone Park.
This event was inspired by a YEG Mental Health team member who faced his own mental health challenges, recognizing the strength required by many to overcome suicidal thoughts and maintain hope. We saw a need to create an evening that honored those lost to suicide and supported others facing similar struggles. At that time, Edmonton lacked such a space, which motivated us to launch the first Bridge of Life.
The first Bridge of Life featured Dan Klempke as guest speaker. He shared the profound loss of his wife to suicide on the High-Level Bridge, providing a deeply personal perspective.
Each year since, community members have shared courageous and uplifting stories of hope, perseverance, and the strength found in connection.
Beginning September 2026, the Bridge of Life Suicide Prevention/Awareness Candlelight Walk & Vigil will be held annually by Momentum Counselling, with ongoing support from Bridge of Life Co-Founder and Lead Organizer Jennifer Hope.
This decision follows years of transition from EMHAC to YEG Mental Health, and now to Bridge of Life. Momentum has supported this event since its inception and was among the first organizations EMHAC championed through the semicolon tattoo festivals and events. This partnership brings the journey full circle.
