Our Story

In 2016, the Edmonton Mental Health Awareness Committee (EMHAC) initiated an event dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention, aiming to create a safe environment for discussing difficult topics while honoring the lives lost to suicide. This initiative resulted in the establishment of the Annual Bridge of Life Suicide Prevention and Awareness Candlelight Walk and Vigil.

Scheduled annually on Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), the event takes place at the High Level Bridge in Edmonton, a location that has been marked by a tragic history of suicide. The inaugural Bridge of Life event was held on September 10, 2016, featuring guest speaker Dan Klempke, who shared his personal story of loss after his wife took her life at the High Level Bridge. This event marked a significant milestone in the city as the first of its kind, reflecting a strong commitment to mental health advocacy by the organizing team.

Each year, the event continues to foster community engagement and support, offering local mental health resources, uplifting musical performances, refreshments, and speakers who share their personal experiences related to suicide. The gathering serves as a safe space for individuals who have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts, those seeking to support loved ones in crisis, and families grieving lost loved ones. It emphasizes the importance of celebration and remembrance while raising awareness about mental health issues.

The event culminates in a candlelight vigil walk across the High Level Bridge, where participants unite in silence to honor those who have died by suicide.

In celebration of its tenth anniversary, the Bridge of Life event has partnered with Momentum Counselling. This partnership is particularly significant, as Momentum Counselling has been actively involved with EMHAC and the YEG Mental Health journey, providing resources, volunteering support, and advocating for mental health awareness at every Bridge of Life event.

The Bridge of Life Suicide Prevention and Awareness Candlelight Walk and Vigil will continue to be presented by Momentum Counselling, with Jennifer Hope, one of its co-founders and a lead organizer, remaining involved in the event's planning and execution.
